Description

The history

This quarterly, published by the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk, has existed continuously since 1971. Initially it was published in Polish as an irregular journal by the National Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, Sopot, and was entitled "Studia i Materialy Oceanologiczne".

Since 1991 the journal has been published in English, in collaboration with the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk. Many international specialists in Marine Sciences have been invited to participate in the Editorial Board. Since 1996, a new edition of the journal, entitled "Oceanological Studies", has been published only in English by the same editors. At that time, Prof. Krzysztof Korzeniewski took over as Editor-in-chief, dr Halina Piekarek-Jankowska became the Managing Editor and dr Adam Krezel was appointed the Editorial Secretary.

The new edition of the journal publishes original articles that contain aspects of physics, oceanography, marine biology, chemistry and geology, and, in particular, studies concerning the Baltic Sea region. New specialists from throughout Europe (Poland, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia) were invited to participate on the Editorial Board. In 1998, The National Library of Poland registered "Oceanological Studies" in the ISSN system as number 1505-232X. In 1999, the National Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in accordance with the resolution from 15 December 1999, resigned from publishing "Oceanological Studies" and appointed as Editor-in-chief professor Halina Piekarek-Jankowska, Head of the Biology, Geography and Oceanology department, University of Gdansk, and dr Maria Szymelfenig as the Editorial Secretary.

On 21 July 1999, the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk signed a cooperation contract with the University of Szczecin. In September of 2002 professor Marcin Plinski was appointed as Editor-in-chief. Grzegorz Kozlowski became the Managing Editor and Editorial Secretary. The cooperation contract from 1999 was annulled and the name of the journal was changed to "Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies". This modification enlarges the subject area of the journal to include hydrobiological aspects of both fresh and marine waters. Since 2002 the only editor of "Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies" has been the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk.
